  • This study was focused on the correlation between motivation given by the lecturers and the studentsÂ’ self-confidence in speaking English. The aim of this study was to find out how significant the motivation given by the lecturers correlate with the studentsÂ’ self-confidence in speaking English. This study took the seventh semester (83) students of English Department of UMM. The data were gained through questionnaires. This study used two questionnaires, the first questionnaire was about the motivation given by the lecturers, and the second questionnaire was about the studentsÂ’ self-confidence in speaking English. Each participant had to questionnaires to fill the two questionnaires based on their experiences and conditions.The data of this study were analyzed by using SPSS version 21.0. It was done by using Pearson correlation technique in order to find whether or not there was any correlation between the two variables. Based on result of the data analysis, it was found that the score of Pearson correlation was 0.072 which means there was a correlation between the two variables, yet it was a very weak correlation. It was supported by the level of significance which was 0.518 which be regarded that the correlation between the two variables was not significant. External motivation that did not work over long term becomes one of thepossible reasons of the insignificant correlation between the two variables.
