  • The learnersÂ’ success in learning English is mostly determined by their mastery of four language skills: reading, speaking, listening, and writing. One of the most important skills that should be mastered by the students is speaking. Speaking is a complicated skill because it needs many elements to be simultaneously used at time. This study concerned with the studentsÂ’ difficulties in learning speaking in EPN program at UMM, their causes, and ways to overcome the difficulties. This study used a qualitative design. The population of this study was the second semester students of Nursing Department (A, B, C, D, and E class). There were 260 numbers of populations in this research, and the writer took 50 students (20%) from the total number. The questionnaires were used as the instruments to collect the data. The result of this study showed that the students got four difficulties with their speaking ability, particularly in terms of inhibition, nothing to say, low or uneven participation, and mother tongue use. The first difficulty is inhibition which is caused by not being fluent in speaking English and nervous can be overcomed by making communication and interaction to the lecturer and other learners. Second difficulty is nothing to say, it is because the students had limited vocabularies, then to solve this difficulty students should increase their vocabulary by trying to listen English language from TV, record, movie, western songs, etc. The next difficulty is about low or uneven participation, it caused by teaching and learning system which was not variative, moreover the topic was not interesting to be discussed, the lecturer should be more creative to make students active in class for instance by using group discussion. Mother tongue use is the last difficulty, sometimes students being afraid if their friends didnÂ’t understand because of their dialect and often mixed English with their mother tongue while speaking, the solution of this difficulty is the lecturer should help to drill the students to speak English with correct pronunciation and have to gave punishment by decreasing studentsÂ’ point.
