  • The purpose of this research is to investigate and describe the kind of methods used by the English tutors, the reason why the English tutors used those methods and the problem faced by the English tutors in teaching Mental Speaking Program at Gaza Course in Kampung Inggris Pare. In this study, the researcher used qualitative research design while the data of this research was collected from the fieldnotes observation and interview with the English tutors. The result of observation and interview showed that the English tutors used four teaching methods in teaching Mental Speaking Program. First, to build studentsÂ’ confident and gain the studentsÂ’ ideas, the tutor applied communicative language teaching. Second, direct method was implemented to encourage the students to communicate directly with the target language. Third, the tutor applied community language learning in order to give students more spaces to express the ideas, argue the opinion and to solve their problems in discussion activity. The last, audio lingual method is applied to give students more practice in conversation so they can avoid pronunciation error. However, there were four problems faced by the tutors in implementing those methods, they are: grammatical error, the use of mother tongue, studentsÂ’ low participation, and studentsÂ’ error in pronunciation.
