- Keyword : Learning strategies, ESP program, and writing. ESP is important to be taught to the English learners to help them in learning English for the specific needs. Unfortunately, based on the preliminary study, they get difficulties in learning writing. In relation to this, learning strategies are needed to help them to overcome their problems in their writing activities.This research is concerned with the kinds of learning strategies used by the students, the problem faced by the students in using learning strategies and the ways to overcome the problems in using learning strategies at English Department University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This research used a qualitative descriptive design because it was intended to describe the kinds of learning strategies they used, the problems they faced and the ways to overcome their problems in using learning strategies. The subjects of this study were the English Department students (2015/2016). To collect the data of this study, the researcher used an interview guide. The result of this study showed that the students used several kinds of learning strategies to support and improve their learning process, especially in learning writing. Those learning strategies were: Memory Strategies, Cognitive Strategies, Meta-cognitive Strategies, Compensation strategies, Affective Strategies and Social Strategies. Furthermore, in using learning strategies, they face the following problems: (1)the problems in using memory strategies, (2) the problems in using affective strategies (3) the problems in using meta-cognitive strategies. Finally, in order to overcome the problems in using learning strategies, they did the following things. Firstly, they tried to encourage themselves and confront their reluctance. Secondly, they tried to overcome their problems by communicating their problems with their friends. They kept going in encouraging themselves although it was hard for them to have their own courage to motivate themselves since they did not have willingness to be better. Thirdly, theymanaged their own learning and overcome their problems by working with their friends, by sharing ideas and making interaction. They tried their best to make a preparation before the writing activities.
