  • Keyword : StudentsÂ’ Anxiety, Speaking, Speaking Anxiety Anxiety is considered as an important issue that foreign language learners suffer from. Anxiety is the state of feeling nervous or worried that something bad is going to happen. Speaking anxiety may become one of the students problems in learning foreign language especially English. This study was carried out to investigate the causes of speaking anxiety and strategies that used by the English teacher to overcome studentsÂ’ anxiety at SMP Negeri 18 Malang. In this study, the researcher used qualitative method and this research is made to analyze the seven-grade studentsÂ’ speaking anxiety. The technique of collecting data is observation, questionnaire (open-ended questionnaire), and interview. Furthermore, 19 students from TB (Terbuka) class were selected to be the participants. The result of this study showed that there are 12 (63%) students who get pressure to get good grades by parents and teacher, 12 (63%) students that lack of confidence, 13 (68%) students that fear of making mistakes, and 9 (47%) students showed that their childhood perceptions of English is difficult caused speaking anxiety. The researcher also found that there are three strategies that used by English teacher to overcome studentsÂ’ anxiety; creating relaxed atmosphere, making group work, and varying speaking activities
