This research was conducted in two cycles by following the procedure of action research, i.e. planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The data of this research study were obtained through observation checklist during teaching learning process and speaking test at the end of the cycles. The findings of this research indicated that the Numbered Heads Together technique was successful in improving both the studentsÂ’ speaking ability and the studentsÂ’ involvement in speaking activities. The improvement could be seen from increase of studentsÂ’ mean score and the studentsÂ’ individual score percentage from pre-cycle to Cycle II. The studentsÂ’ mean score had improve greatly from the studentsÂ’ mean score of preliminary test which was 62,5 to the studentsÂ’ mean score in Cycle II which was 88,3, in which 100 % of studentsÂ’ individual score achieved the score of ≥ 70 based on Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM) English subjects in SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang especially for X Grade. Based on those findings, it can be concluded that the application of Numbered Heads Together technique is effective in teaching speaking comprehension. This suggests that the English teacher could implement Numbered Heads Together technique in teaching speaking in order to motivate students in learning English speaking.
