- Keyword : Translation Strategies for Realia, Abstracts, StudentsÂ’ Translation Bureau The procedure which entails of the description about how translation problems confronted by the translator in translating realia are resolved and it is called translation strategy for realia. The researcher chose to analyze this topic in order to deepen the apprehending about translation strategies for realia. Thus, it was become acceptable and intelligible by the readers. Furthermore, the researcher chose abstract texts as the object of this study because the researcher would like to investigate realia in academic or formal languages, so that there will be possibilities to find the term of realia in academic texts. The aim of this study is to investigate kinds of translation strategies for realia and discover the motives behind the choice of the most dominant strategy in translating abstracts employed by studentsÂ’ translation bureau at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This study applied qualitative research design because it attempted to broaden and/or deepen our understanding about translation strategies for realia. There were two instruments used in this study, namely: document analysis to find kinds of translation strategies for realia and interview to discover the underlying reasons of the translators applied the strategy. The results of this study showed that there were 52 realia used six kinds of the translation strategies. They were maintenance strategy, loan translation/calque strategy, description strategy, generalization strategy, adaptation strategy and combination of translation strategies. From 52 realia, there were 17 realia translated by using maintenance strategy. Consequently, it can be seen that the most dominant strategy is maintenance strategy. In addition, the underlying reasons behind the choice of the most dominant strategy according to the translators were: (1) there were several terms which did not exist in English, thus she chose to unchanged the realia, (2) the translator did not need to give more explanation because realia made her easier and faster during the translation process, (3) it retained cultural specific element.
