- Keyword : teaching English, speaking, techniques Speaking is a skill that enables us to produce utterances which involves expressing ideas and opinions. Moreover, speaking is the most difficult aspect for students to master since there are a lot of components involve. Therefore, to make the teaching and learning speaking interesting more and easy to understand, the teacher should use some techniques of teaching effectively. The techniques should be suitable with studentÂ’s characteristics and conditions. The study used descriptive qualitative. The subject of this study was the English teacher who taught English at SMA Islam Batu. Moreover, in collecting the data the researcher used two instruments. The instruments were observation checklist guideline and interview guideline. The researcher read and reviewed the data that will be classified. Then, the description data will be processed to gain the conclusion. The result of observation and interview showed that the English teacher used five teaching techniques while teaching speaking, such as: role play, demonstration, oral presentation, storytelling, and picture describe. Those techniques were used in order to make the students speak up.
