- Keyword : Language Anxiety, Speaking The foreign language classroom setting which requires the students to speak spontaneously in the L2 is reported as a stressful activity and often leads students to have an anxiety reaction which impedes them to perform successfully in the classroom. Anxiety that happens only in foreign language classroom setting is defined as Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA). FLA is depicted as a set of uneasy feelings of tension, apprehension and fear that students encountered when they are in a foreign language class. The issue of FLA is discussed under the construct of Psycholinguistics and Second Language Acquisition (SLA) studies. Speaking class is reported as the most anxiety-provoking class and the students who are in the beginning level seem to have high anxiety level in speaking class as they are lacking in mature communication skill. Therefore, the writer is interested to find out the level of language anxiety of the 1st-year students (2nd semester) of English Language Education Department in University of Muhammadiyah Malang and investigates the factors that trigger and lessen studentsÂ’ anxiety in speaking class. The specific purpose of the study was to find out language anxiety level of the 1st-year students (2nd semester) of English Language Education Department in University of Muhammadiyah Malang and investigated the factors that trigger and lessen studentsÂ’ anxiety in speaking class. The mixed method was employed in this study. The data were collected from 2nd semester studentsÂ’ questionnaires (FLCAS) and interview with five (5) highly anxious students at English Language Education Department. The instruments used by the writer were questionnaire sheets and interview guide. The writer took 25% from the total population as the samples of current study using random sampling. The representative samples in this study consisted of 59 students ranging from ten (10) speaking classes. The findings in current study concluded that the majority students (90%) at English Language Education Department experiencing medium level of anxiety (76-119) in speaking class. Additionally, based on studentsÂ’ responses on FLCAS, most of the students were reported to feel apprehension during the class activity, afraid of getting negative judgement from peers, and afraid of failing the class. There are six (6) factors that can trigger and also lessen studentsÂ’ anxiety obtained from the interviews, those were; 1) Personal and interpersonal anxieties; 2) StudentsÂ’ beliefs about language learning; 3) TeachersÂ’ beliefs about language teaching; 4) Teacher-Learner interaction; 5) Classroom tasks; and 6) Language testing. However, there were two students who did not experience anxiety caused by language testing since they did not have formal test during the speaking class.
