  • Keyword : Teaching, speaking, techniques Speaking is a verbal use of language to communicate with others. By communication, people can express their ideas, opinions and feelings to others. The success of teaching speaking is influenced by the techniques which are used by the teacher. By using appropriate techniques, the teacher is able to encourage the students to be more active in speaking class. The aim of this research were to know: (1) kind of techniques used by the English teacher in teaching speaking to the third-grade students at SDN Junrejo 1 Kota Batu and (2) the implementation of the techniques in teaching speaking to the third-grade students at SDN Junrejo 1 Kota Batu. This study typically adopted a descriptive qualitative research design since the data were in the form of words, not in the form of numerical data like in the experimental research design. Furthermore, the data were derived from interview and classroom observation. The researcher conducted two times observations and one interview with the English teacher. The result of this research showed that the techniques used by the English teacher in teaching speaking to third-grade students were using song and pronunciation drills techniques. The teacher applied song technique in order to make the students enjoy the class, brought them to speak and express their idea. Song technique also helped the students obtained new vocabularies. Moreover, the teacher applied pronunciation drills technique in order to make the students speak English well because most of the children still have some pronunciation errors. In conclusion, the teacher used techniques which are appropriate with the studentsÂ’ understanding and techniques which are simple, practical, and easy to be applied.
