- Keyword : CTL (Contextual Teaching and Learning Approach), Writing Descriptive Text, Experimental Research. This research is conducted in order to know the effectiveness of Contextual Teaching and Learning approach on writing descriptive text in the second year students of SMP 1 Muhammadiyah Malang. It was conducted based on the reality that students writing skill in descriptive text was low since they did not have ideas and were not interested in learning writing subject. The researcher tried to present CTL approach in teaching writing descriptive text since it focused on studentsÂ’ involvement in the learning process so students could find out the material through the real life situation in order to apply knowledge in their life. This research used quasi experimental design to investigate the effect of CTL approach toward the studentsÂ’ writing descriptive text. The researcher divided the class into experimental and control group. Experimental group was given treatment by using CTL approach while control group taught with conventional approach. The population of this research was the second grade students of SMP 1 Muhammadiyah Malang in the academic year 2015/2016. The researcher took two classes as the sample, they were 8 A ad 8 C. The instrument in this research in collecting the data was pre-test and post-test in form of writing test. T-test computation by using SPSS 21 versions of windows are used to analyze the data. The result of this research finds that there is positive effect of Contextual Teaching and Learning on the studentsÂ’ writing descriptive text. The result of t-test computation found that t-value was 14, 820 and t-table was 2, 045. Since t-value was more than t-table, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Significant value was 000 was less than 0, 5, it meant null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. While, alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the students of the second grade of SMP 1 Muhammadiyah Malang in writing descriptive text by using CTL approach was improving.
