- Keyword : StudentsÂ’ Perception, TeacherÂ’s Reason to Use the Techniques, Vocabulary,Vocabulary Teaching Technique In English teaching and learning, there are four skills which have to be learned by the students, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Those skills are strongly affected by vocabulary knowledge. Additionally, the teacher should select the appropriate techniques in teaching English vocabulary. Furthermore, the purposes of this study are to know the techniques used by the teacher in teaching English vocabulary, to know the teacherÂ’s reason to use the techniques in teaching English vocabulary, and to know the studentsÂ’ perception toward the techniques used by the teacher in teaching English vocabulary to seventh grade students at SMP N 6 Tanjung Selor. Moreover, this study employed a mixed method research design. The research subjects of this study were the English teacher and the students of VII A, B, and C at SMPN 6 Tanjung Selor. To collect the data, the researcher used interview, observation, and questionnaire as the research instruments. Besides, the result of this study showed that the teacher used nine techniques in teaching English vocabulary such as visuals, mime and gesture, synonymy and definition, contrasts and opposites, scales, example of the type, translation, asking others, and using a dictionary. Those techniques are used by the teacher because some reasons such as the students will be more interested to learn English; understand the meaning of the words easily; enlarge their vocabulary; know about a group of words; and be able to use their language to communicate with their friends and share knowledge with each other. Finally, the students gave positive perception toward those techniques because the questionnaire score was 57 which constitued as positive perception.
