- Keyword : Comparative Study, Teaching Technique, Picture Technique, Translating Story Technique, Vocabulary Teaching technique is teacherÂ’s way of delivering the subject of learning to the students. Practicing good teaching technique will result in more interest and enthusiastic students in learning English. In this present study, the researcher tries to identify whether teaching using pictures excel teaching using translated story at first grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Malang. Therefore, this study is conducted to verify the result of those techniques whether the mean score of those technique has a significant difference or not. The quasi-experimental design was used as a research design in this study because the subject were not possible to assign randomly by the researcher and they were already organized well in the class. For the purpose of collecting data, 91 students were participated in this study. In line with that, the researcher used test as the research instrument. There were two kinds of test used in this study. The first was pre-test and the second one was pos-test. Then, the data was analyzed by using manual calculation and SPSS (Statistic Product and Statistic Solution). Based on the data analysis, it was found that the result of to in experimental group A was higher than t-table (3.31>2.00). Meanwhile to in experimental group B was lower than t-table (0.84<2.00). This result reflected that there was significant mean difference score of pre-test and post-test of the groups. In addition, the results simply contribute to make students became more enthusiastic and active doing the learning process. This was also giving the evidence that this for this study the picture technique excelled the translating story technique, so the teacher can pick the appropriate technique to achieve the goal of teaching learning process, especially in mastering vocabulary.
