- Keyword : Authentic Materials, English for Young Learners, Young Learners Authentic materials are the genuine materials produced by certain people or groups for any purposes that are other than to teach the language. These materials could help the learner to experience the language as it was used in the real situation. Furthermore, it could help them to bridge the gap between the classroom knowledge with the outside world. Accordingly, in this study, the researcher focused on analyzing the authentic materials used in English for Young Learners Course at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Specifically, it aimed to know the kind of the authentic materials and the students teachers challenges while using authentic materials in English for Young Learners Course at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Descriptive qualitative research design was applied in this inquiry. Observation and interview were the research instruments. Furthermore, the subjects of this study were 6 students teachers who taught 6th grade students in English for Young Learners course at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The result of the study showed that there were 17 differences AM used in English for Young Learners Course. Through those 17, authentic listening/ viewing and authentic visual materials were the most favorable AM used in the teaching and learning process. Both of the materials contained amusing picture, animation, and sound which help the teachers to attract the studentsÂ’ interest and motivation toward learning. However, through it used there were also 4 differences challenges found. Using AM need much time to prepare, it also often contain difficult language and vocabulary which is not suitable for the beginner language learners, some content is unfamiliar and it is culturally biased for the students. To sum up, although AM were motivating tools that can be used to rise the studentsÂ’ interest and motivation toward learning the FL, teachers have to carefully select the materials. The materials they used must not be too easy or too difficult. Thus, they have to see the materials based on the suitability of content, the exploitability, the readability, and the presentation before it used.
