- Keyword : Snakes and ladders game technique, teaching simple past tense, studentÂ’s simple past tense ability, quasi experimental research. English grammar is one of the biggest problems of concerning English subject. Students have to learn, remember, and apply the formula in the sentences. To solve this problem, the teacher should give students motivation in learning grammar, do a research to the studentsÂ’ difficulties in grammar, make a good grammar test and have a good teaching strategy or technique in grammar, etc. The aim of this study is developing studentsÂ’ understanding in learning tense, especially simple past tense and to find out whether snakes and ladders game technique gives the significant difference or not. The research design of this research is a quasi experimental research in the form of non-randomized control group design with pre-test and post-test that was divided into two groups: Group 1 (Experimental group) which is the treatment of snakes and ladders game technique will be delivered, Group 2 (Control Group) which is treated without using snakes and ladders game technique. Data analysis in this research is using independent sample T- test formula. Before applying the formula, the data were checked by using normality and homogeneity (F-test). The result of F-test shows that the data have normal distribution and homogeneity. The result of independent sample T-test is P value (sig.2 tailed) < 0,01 (0,00 < 0,01) , therefore, it can be concluded that Ho was rejected and H1 was accepted. It means that the use of snakes and ladders game technique gives the significant difference. To sum up, the use of snakes and ladders game technique is effective enough to be used in improving the studentsÂ’ simple past tense ability.
