  • Keyword : Assessment, Portfolio Assessment In this study, the writer was eager to analyze the use of portfolio assessment in teaching English at the Eleventh Grade of Muhammadiyah Senior High School 3 Batu. This study focuses on the characteristics of portfolio assessment at the Eleventh Grade of Muhammadiyah Senior High School 3 Batu, the problem faced by the English teacher in applying portfolio assessment and the ways to cope with the problems. This study was conducted on descriptive qualitative design to draw the data of the topic discussed. The instruments to collect the data were observation field note and interview guideline; meanwhile, the methods to collect the data were non-participant observation and semi or partially structured interview. The result of this study showed that the characteristics of portfolio assessment which were used only two characteristics; multiple sources and explicit. Further, the English teacher faced three problems; it was difficult for the teacher to decide the content of studentsÂ’ portfolio suitable with basic competence and indicator, it was difficult for the teacher to analyze the data from portfolio assessment, and the lack of space to keep studentsÂ’ portfolio. Therefore, he overcame the problems by giving guideline on what material to include in portfolio assessment and providing specific numerical score (scoring rubric) in every portfolio and providing the sufficient space to keep portfolios. Finally, the researcher proposed that the English teacher, and also the students have a better cooperation to create a better implementation in teaching and learning process using portfolio assessment.
