- Keyword : Gerund, The Jakarta Post, Headlines Understanding the English structure is the crucial part for learners to understanding the information, especially in written materials. Learners often confuse to distinguish the function of –ing form that referring to Gerund. Gerund is the v-ing form which functions as a noun. In this study, the researcher tries to describe the functions of gerund in the “Headlines” articles of The Jakarta Post which makes readers understand on the use of gerund. Qualitative (content or document) research design was used as a research method in this research. For the purpose of collecting data, there were twelve “Headlines” articles of The Jakarta Post of this present research, and they were selected randomly from 9th-14th March, 2015 in which the researcher chose two articles per each date randomly. In line with that, the researcher used document analysis to collect the data. Then, the data was analyzed by using Azar’s and Hagen’s (2009) and Bland’s theories. Based on the result of content or document analysis, it was found that the functions of gerund found in the “Headlines” articles of The Jakarta Post were gerund as the object of the preposition, gerund as direct object of the certain verbs, gerund as the subject of the sentence, and the special expression followed by gerund.
