  • Keyword : teaching technique, reading, ESP Reading is an active process in which people attempt to extract ideas, concepts, thoughts, or images from the pattern of words set forth on the printed page. Reading is the most difficult aspect for students to master since there is a lot of components involved. Therefore, to make the teaching and learning reading more interesting and easy to understand, the lecturer should use some techniques of teaching effectively. The techniques should be suitable with studentsÂ’ characteristics and conditions. The aim of this research is to discover in the teaching techniques used in reading class, to describe the implementation of the teaching techniques, and to find out the reason of using the teaching techniques. In this study, the researcher uses a qualitative research design. The instruments are used by the researcher observation and interview. The subject of this study is ESP lecturer who taught reading. The result of observation and interview showed that the ESP lecturer used four teaching techniques while teaching reading. Those are reading aloud, scanning, skimming and silent reading. Those techniques were implemented by the lecturer in the class using teaching steps: pre-teaching, whilst-teaching, and post-teaching. The implementation of reading aloud was combined with scanning technique now withstanding the other techniques were implemented separately. Also, the lecturerÂ’s reason of using those teaching techniques is to make the students easily understand the material and to drag the students into a comfortable learning atmosphere without giving any boredom.
