  • Keyword : correlation, speaking pauses, accuracy This research was aimed at understanding the correlation between speaking pauses and accuracy made by third semester students English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This research was based on the fact that English becomes one of international languages in the world. Therefore, fluency and accuracy in speaking are important for students in order to avoid the misinterpretation in gaining the information. Moreover, the students will be considered as good speaker if they are speaking accurately. It encourages them to speak in well organize, grammatically correct in both structure and its meaning. Research design used in this study was correlation research. It was intended to know if there is a significance correlation between speaking pauses and accuracy. The population in this study was the third semester students of English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang who joined Speaking III. The data were collected by using questionnaires. QuestionnaireÂ’s statements were about speaking pauses and accuracy. Referring to the computing result of Pearson Product Moment correlation, it showed that the coefficient correlation between speaking pauses and accuracy was 0.475. Based on the r table of 57, it can be seen that r table in the significance level 5% was 0.261. That is to say that re=0.475 was higher that coefficient valuer table=0.261. It means that there was a significant correlation between speaking pauses and accuracy at third semester student English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted.
