- The article explores the differences in business strategies deployed in health information exchange (HIE) that are financially sustainable against those not using the lens of institutional and strategic management theories. It refers to HIEs as organizations devoted to electronically transferring patients' medical data between providers to improve the delivery of care which evolved as private extensions of the electronic health record systems and as independent community-based organizations.
