- Listening is a starter to learn a language. Especially in learning English, listening is very essential subject to learn for helping the students to improve their abilities in learning English. The listening class is designed for the students to be skilled listeners in order to succeed academically. In contradiction, there are some students who have problems in listening class. There are many factors that might cause problems in listening class. Each student has different problems in listening class. In this study the writer focused on linguistic problem as a scope of his research, and the linguistic problems aspect that the used in this research are vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension. The purposes of study are to find the problem faced by the second year students of SMA Shalahuddin Malang in listening class and to know how the teacher solved the studentsÂ’ problem in listening class. The research design used in this study was descriptive quantitative because the writer used numbers in clarifying the data about the studentsÂ’ problem in learning listening faced by the second year student of SMA Shalahuddin Malang. The populations of this study were all of the second year students of SMA Shalahuddin Malang. In collecting the data, the writer used test and interview. The test consists of three linguistic elements (vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension) in listening. The forms of the test were answering the question from the dialogue, completing the sentences from narrative sentences, and dictating the data. The interview used in this research was unstructured interview. The interview itself was done once, and the questions of interview were five questions. The findings of the study showed that the comprehension was a problem faced by the second year students in SMA Shalahuddin Malang in listening class, and the teacher tries to solve the problem by giving more portions on comprehension listening materials.
