- Considered as a foreign language, English has several differences from Bahasa Indonesia. One of the differences that is commonly considered as a big difficulty is the grammar of the two languages. When English has to be learned, the learners face several problems for example in tenses structure as the part of grammar. Grammar is important when the students deliver their ideas, especially to make a sentence. Without grammar, it is not easy to make a good sentence. Changing positive sentence into negative and interrogative sentence seems easy for the students, but many students are often confused in changing it. Therefore, the student should be careful to change the sentence. Considering the importance of changing the sentence, this study is intended to describe the ability in changing the sentence of the second year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The research design of this study was descriptive quantitative research because the data were analyzed and described in numerical forms. The research population in this study was the second year studentsÂ’ of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The total number of population was 84 students who were divided into three classes (8A, 8B, and 8C). The writer applied non random sampling and took class B consisting 31 students for the sample. The instrument of this study was test and it was conducted on 12 May 2011. The result of data analysis showed that the mean score was 33.8, which indicated the ability of second year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang in changing positive sentence into negative and interrogative sentence was poor.
