  • English Conversation Extracurricular (ECE) by British Five is a program for the students at SMPN 5 Malang to enlarge their English proficiency out of school. It is hoped motivate the students to speak English. In this case, they are expected to be able to speak naturally, fluently, confidently, spontaneously, and correctly. So, motivation is needed by students in improving their English skill because motivation can increase their activity to master it. Without motivation, the students do not have spirit to study. Therefore, the researcher wants to investigate about (1) what the factors do motivate the students in joining ECE by British Five at SMPN 5 Malang and (2) what dominant motivation that make the students interested in joining ECE by British Five at SMPN 5 Malang. In this study, the researcher applied descriptive quantitative research because the researcher wants to describe the phenomena of studentsâ€TM motivation in joining ECE by British Five and to know the most dominant motivation of students in joining ECE.The population in this study was the first grade students RSBI of SMPN 5 Malang consisting of seven classes. The researcher used cluster sampling and took 7.3 RSBI which consists of 29 students. Based on analysis, there were seven factors that made the students motivated in joining ECE by British Five at SMPN 5 Malang. There were intrinsic factors (e.g. anxiety, curiosity and interest, self-efficacy and locus of control), and extrinsic factors (e.g. social relationship (peers, teacher, and parents), class climate, and school. The researcher also found the most dominant motivation of students in joining ECE by using "Yes" answers of questionnaire. The amounts of seven factors in above were 373 "Yes" answers of questionnaire and total percentages were 100%. The most dominant motivation of students in joining ECE by british Five at SMPN 5 Malang was locus of control factors with 72 (19%) "Yes" answer and school with 69 (18%) "Yes" answered. It can be concluded that the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation have the important role for the students in joining English Conversation Extracurricular (ECE) by British Five at SMPN 5 Malang
