  • This study was focused on the readability level of reading text. Readability is the ease or efficiency with which a text can be comprehended by a reader to which they understand it, read in an optimal speed, and finds the meaning of text reading. This study used descriptive quantitative research. The object of this study was the whole reading texts in Developing English Competencies for Senior High School (SMA/MA) Grade X published by Pusat Perbukuan Departemen Nasional which contains 14 reading texts. The writer used documentary analysis to get the data and used the Flesch Reading Ease Formula to analyze the data. The result of this study showed that one reading text (2/39) is categorized as very easy style with percentage of 7.14%. Six reading texts (1/13, 1/14, 1/16, 2/40, 4/ 92, and 6/142) are categorized as easy style with percentage of 42.857%, which are estimated for the 5th grade. Three reading texts (2/42, 3/68, and 6/141) are categorized as fairly easy with percentage of 21.428 % which are estimated for the 7th grade. One reading text (5/116) is categorized as standard with percentage of 7.14% which estimated for the 7th- 8th grades, two reading texts (5/119 and 6/142 ) are categorized as fairly difficult with percentage of 14.285% which estimated for some high school. One reading text (4/95) is categorized as difficult which estimated for the 13th - 16th grade. From the readability level it was concluded that in general reading text in DEC was readable because 78.571% are readable and 21.428% are not readable. But, if those findings viewed from the suitability level readers, it was only 14.285% of reading texts fits for senior high school grade, 7.14% of reading texts suits for college and the rests, 78.575% of reading texts of reading materials in this book are appropriate for students below senior high school (SMA/MA).
