  • Language is the most effective tool of communication. Learning language is not just a matter of obtaining a set of roles and building up large vocabularies but also the ability to use it in several situations. In this study, the writer analyses about how prefix cards used in teaching vocabulary of seventh grade at SMP Muhammadiyah 06 Dau Malang. This study is intended to know how prefix cards used in teaching vocabulary of seventh grade at SMP Muhammadiyah 06 Dau Malang. This study was descriptive qualitative. According to Ary (2002) qualitative research is a generic term for a variety or research approaches that study phenomena in their natural setting without predetermined hypotheses. The instruments used in this study were non-participant observation and interview. The researcher had done observation three times. The writer observed the phenomena that exist during vocabulary teaching. The writer observed the English teacher of SMP Muhammadiyah 06 Dau Malang especially VII B class. Then, she was interviewing the English teacher to know the teacherâ€TMs performance in vocabulary teaching. The result of this study showed that the English teacher used prefix cards to teach vocabulary. In this research, the technique used by English teacher was matching the prefix cards. The students had to match the red cards (prefix) and yellow cards (root words) correctly. The English teacher also gave the test to know the studentsâ€TM vocabulary ability. By using prefix cards in the classroom, the students are helped to understand the vocabulary. In summary, the English teacher could use prefix cards in order to avoid the monotonous situation and studentsâ€TM boredom. Besides, the students would be interested to learn more vocabulary through prefix cards.
