- A language is a system of arbitrary of verbal symbols by which members of speech community used as a means of communication to interact and express their ideas, feeling and thought. Human beings always contact and interact with other in their social life. Actually, in our surrounding there are a lots of social groups of community with different styles and characteristics to show their identity. Slang is unconventional words or phrases that express something new or something old in a new way. Slang expressions are usually introduced by the members of particular social group. The function of slang is to make the speech vivid, colorful and interesting, and the speakers often seem to keep up with the current trends in slang for a while during their lifetimes but then grind to a halt when they can no longer be bothered about whether their vocabulary is fashionable. This study was intended to find out: (1) the slang words or phrases that used by the teenagers in "Gridiron Gang" movie (2) the meaning of slang words or phrases that used by the teenagers in "Gridiron Gang" movie (3) the context of slang used in †̃Gridiron Gang" movie. This study was descriptive qualitative. The instruments used in this study were participant observation and documentation. The researcher has done observation on dialogue in "Gridiron Gang" movie. Then, she was analyzing 51 slang words or phrases with the relevant theories to get the valid data. The findings of this study show that the 51 slang words or phrases that used by the teenager in "Gridiron Gang" movie are divided into two types, such as 32 slang in the form of words and 19 slang in the form of phrases. The meaning of slangs taken from dictionary and from the context of the film. The context of slang used in "Gridiron Gang" are to show expressions of anger, happiness, and part of body. Using slang is the simplest way in conversation, especially conversation among the young. By using slang, the teenagers will be easier to deliver their expressions and feelings.
