  • The focus of this study was on the teaching techniques used by the teacher in teaching vocabularies at MTs Surya Buana Malang. There were two problems that the researcher wanted to know; the first was to know the techniques used by the teacher in teaching vocabularies at MTs Surya Buana Malang, and the second was to know the studentsâ€TM perception about the techniques used by their teacher in teaching vocabularies. The study was limited to the English teacher who taught at second class and the second class students of MTs Surya Buana Malang. There were one teacher and two classes at second class of MTs Surya Buana. They were divided into class A and class B. This study used descriptive design in conducting the data related to the research problems. There were three instruments used here in conducting the data which were observation, interview, and questionnaire. Furthermore, the researcher set up the observational checklist and used tape recorder in recording interview with the teacher to find the teaching vocabulary techniques. The researcher used questionnaire data to know the studentsâ€TM perception about the techniques used by their teacher in teaching vocabularies. The research findings revealed that there were seven techniques used by the teacher in teaching vocabularies. They were visual technique, mime and gesture technique, the use of illustrative situations, the use of synonymy and definition, example of the type, asking others, and contextual guesswork technique. The teacher often used illustrative situations, synonymy and definition, and mime and gesture technique in teaching vocabularies and the students had positive responses to those techniques. But, the teacher should not use full English speaking in explaining English lesson to the students because they had a little background knowledge about the lesson.
