  • During centuries, teaching method has changed frequently. Using traditional method which is emphasized to the theory is inapplicable. Nowadays, method has been developed to be an active method in which the students have been intended to use and apply the knowledge that they have in real life. Thus, there are some teaching methods which found and developed in order to meet the teaching purposes, one of them is STAD. Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) is a part of Cooperative Learning that techniques referred to as Student Team Learning method. STAD method is developed by Robert Slavin (1986). STAD is very effective to be implemented among heterogeneous students. Students whose have different knowledge, characteristics, and of course intelligent will try to help each other to understand the topic. In the STAD approach students are assigned to be four or five member teams reflecting a heterogeneous grouping of high, average, and low achieving students. Here, the students work together in learning and responsible to their own as othersâ€TM learning. However, the studentsâ€TM tasks are not only doing something for themselves but also learning something as a team until all team members have mastered the material which is being studied. This research aimed to know the improvement of studentâ€TMs speaking proficiency through cooperative learning type STAD and the implementation of cooperative learning type STAD in English course for IMM students at UMM. This research applied Classroom Action Research in two cycles. The subject of this study was the first year of IMM students in IT Department at UMM. The data were gathered from observation, test and interview. It was concluded that the IMM studentsâ€TM speaking proficiency was improved after the implementation of Cooperative Learning type STAD applied in the first and second cycle. It could be seen in the average score for each test that showed improvement from 6, 81 to 7, 28. In addition, the four students who failed passing the criteria of success in speaking on their first cycle, they succeed on their second cycle. Therefore, it increased the student participation to be more active speaking English. They were able to help each other to improve speaking skills by discussion. It had been proved that cooperative learning using STAD forced every member of the group to be an active participate. In addition, based on the analysis of the result at the second cycle, it was concluded that the implementation of Cooperative Learning type STAD showed success according to the criteria of success that had decided before.
