- The purposes of this study were (1) to know about communication strategies used by student teacher at English department in teaching to young learners, and (2) to know about the purposes of student- teacher in teaching to young learners at English department University Muhammadiyah Malang academic year 2007. In this study the writer used descriptive qualitative research because this study purposed to describe in details about teacherâ€TMs communication strategies types in teaching English to young learner in EYL elective course at 1st grade students in English department of UMM. The total number of EYL student teachers in 1st grade was 10 people. The research subject used in this study was 10 student teachers of EYL. The research instrument used by the writer was observation and direct interview to collect the data. Observations were conducted in 5 meetings. The results of the observation showed that 10 student-teachers used four communication strategies; comprehension check, clarification request, repetitions, and mother tongue. The dominant communication strategies used by student teacher were repetitions and mother tongue. Based on the interview with student-teachers, the writer found that the purposes of student- teachers used communication strategies were very useful to make the teaching and learning process run well and successfully reach its purposes.
