- Literature is a kind of art, usually written to offer pleasure illumination. It gives pleasure and entertains the reader. Besides, it allows the reader to think, to feel, and thus to gain new insights and new experiences. Literature is the reflection of human’s life. It means that literature can teach about how the real life happens to the readers. That is the reason why the writer analyzed literature especially novel entitled An Analysis on Main Character’s Ambition in Patrick Suskind’s Novel “Perfume: The Story of A Murderer” The problems discussed in this study were what Grenouille’s ambition is, how Grenouille’s effort to get his ambition is and what the effect of Grenouille’s ambition to his surrounding is. The study employed descriptive research because this study tried to describe the phenomena that happened in human life and the data were collected in a form of words, not in a form of numbers. Besides, there was no treatment as in experimental research. The approach used in this study was objective approach. The writer did not need to study the author’s life or background of work but just analyze the work itself. The data collected based on the dialogues, paragraphs, and quotations of the novel related to the main character’s ambition. The result of this study showed that Grenouille had two ambitions in his life. They were he wanted to be perfumer and he wanted to be loved by all people around the world. Grenouille’s efforts to get his ambition were that he worked for the perfumer, did some experiments, and murdered. The effects caused by Grenouille were people so threatened, they fought, and government tightening the security system.
