  • English, nowadays, becomes an “obliging” language for everyone, not only for adults but also children. It is shown by many kindergartens and elementary schools that give English class as their program. This is proven by some researchers who stated that 6-12 years old is a golden age or an ideal age to learn language besides the mother-tongue. Moreover, Sabillah (2004:45) stated that most eight to ten year olds will have some sort of language awareness and readiness which they bring with them into the foreign language classroom. George Yale (1996:176) stated that children have biological capacity to understand language during the early years of life. Moreover, Rachmajanti (1993, in Cahyono, 1997) stated that learning foreign language during children early years is better because their minds are still flexible and do not have any psychological problem yet. Parents and teachers have to know their children condition in learning although they are capable enough to learn English or other languages. Sometimes, children are already bored with other school subjects and they still have to learn English. Scott and Ytreberg (2002) mentioned that having a very short attention and concentration span is one of childrenÂ’s characteristics. It shows that children are easily getting bored when they learn something, especially language. Therefore, for English teachers, it is important to teach English fun and interesting. Pamilu (2007) stated that giving interesting techniques and media can introduce second or foreign language to children more easily. She also mentioned that songs, bilingual stories, and games using foreign language can be the examples. Moreover, Cahyono (2009) mentioned that songs are nice to sing and singing a song is fun. This leads to belief that using songs in English classroom will make students interested in the English lessons. Cahyono also stated that singing English songs is means of making students happy, if they are, they will be able to learn English materials better. Sabilah (2011) mentioned that songs can add variety and enjoyment, change pace, reinforce learned language pattern, and motivate learners. It means that when learners or students feel bored with English lesson, song can change their mood without missing any material. The basic of learning English is vocabulary. Having a lot of vocabulary, students can learn English more easily. For students, it is little bit difficult to have vocabulary just by reading or memorizing words. Songs can be useful to help students having more vocabulary. Heriyawati (2009, in Cahyono, 2009) states English songs can be used to teach English vocabulary, for example “ABC” song is used to teach alphabets. Other examples are “Old MacDonald” is used to teach about animals, “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” and “Hockey-Pockey” is used to teach about parts of body. Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Muhammadiyah 1 Kedungadem Bojonegoro, as a private elementary school, has a good program to improve studentsÂ’ mastery of vocabulary by sticking ‘WALLÂ’ words on wall, ‘CUPBOARDÂ’ on a cupboard, etc. These words are not used effectively. Students just “see” them as “ornament”. Moreover, this positive step is not followed by a creative teaching. Teachers just teach materials written in a book without any added-activity. This makes students having a little attention to English subject. A previous research by Kartikasari (2008) about teaching English using song and media summarized that teaching English using song could help studentsÂ’ memory of vocabulary. Kartikasari also stated that children or elementary students needed new and fun situation during learning English, and song could be used as the technique. Therefore, from those reasons, the writer decides to do a research entitled “Improving StudentsÂ’ Vocabulary Ability Using Song at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Muhammadiyah 1 Kedungadem Bojonegoro”. This research has purpose to find out if teaching English using song improves studentsÂ’ vocabulary ability. Hopefully, the writer can explain widely about teaching English for young learners, so it can add some knowledge and help readers understand how to teach young learners.
