  • Language has an important role for human beings that is for communication. Nowadays, the language that has been used widely for communication by people around the world is English. That is why learning English become priority in many countries especially in Indonesia. In Indonesia, children start learning English by the age of 4 or 5. However, there are some children who were born with disabilities such as mentally retarded children. For mentally retarded children, it is hard to learn English because they have a problem with their intellectual. The purpose of this study is to know and to describe the English teaching method used by the teacher at SLB-C Bakti Luhur Malang so that mentally retarded students can learn English like normal students. This study used descriptive qualitative research because in this study the researcher tried to study descriptively about the English teaching method used by the teacher in teaching mentally retarded students. The instruments used by the researcher to gather the data were observation and interview. Based on the observation and interview, the teacher used three methods in teaching English to the mentally retarded students, they are Grammar-Translation method, Audio-lingual method, and Total Physical Response method. In applying Grammar-Translation method and Audio-lingual method, the teacher faced a problem. The problem was that the students could not understand well the material given by the teacher. The teacher’s way to cope with the problem was doing a lot of repetitions in the teaching until the students could understand the material well.
