- Literature is creation and expression of imagination and ideas by using aesthetic beautiful written form. The basic function of literature is to satisfy the readers, swing them with complicated conflicts, complex conflicts or to bring the readers’ imagination through the story. Novel is one of the literary works that has purpose for getting better understanding about human life and human feeling. The reader will know about other cultures where the story happened by reading novel. The researcher is interested in analyzing “Eat Pray Love” novel because this novel describes four cultures in different countries that are America, Italy, India, and Indonesia. This study focused on cultural shocks experienced that faced by Elizabeth Gilberth. There are two statements of the problems, namely: (1) What are the cultural shocks experienced by Elizabeth Gilberth in “Eat Pray Love” novel? (2) How did Elizabeth Gilberth solve her cultural shocks in “Eat Pray Love” novel? This study applied descriptive qualitative method by collecting the data and reviewing literature which are relevant to the topic to prove research data. Moreover, the approach used in this study is an objective approach because the researcher is not necessary to study about the author’s life, background of work, or background of society. The findings of the study showed that Elizabeth Gilberth got some culture shocks. There are three kinds of cultural shocks faced by Elizabeth Gilbert. First was language shock. She could not speak well because the differences of language. Second, Social shocks. She felt surprised and discomfort with her new environment. Third was rule of behavior shock. Ashram is the place of spiritual learning. She felt much depression and almost frustration with behavior in Ashram. In addition, Elizabeth did several ways to solve her cultural shocks. She learned Italian language. She also made friend and some activities in her new environment. All of Elizabeth’s cultural shocks could be solved by her. She tried to learn and adapt everything in her new environment in every country.
