- Alay is an acronym for (anak layangan, anak layu, or anak kelayapan) the phenomenon experienced by Indonesian youth, who want to have recognized status among his / her friends by their unique style in fashion or style in writing word. The Alay word is considered as a result of the rapid growth of the new words that is happening as a creative expression from people to make words more unique and impressive to be written. The spreading of Alay words is so fast, especially among young people because the influences of social networking especially in Twitter. Thus, the researcher is interested in conducting an investigation Alay word used by Twitter user in Tweeting. Meanwhile, the purposes of this research are 1) to know the Alay words which are found by Twitter user in Tweeting; 2) to know the lexical meaning of words used by the Alay Twitter user in composing Tweet; and 3) to know kinds of word formation which are usually used in Tweeting. Therefore, the researcher will discuss deeply about the Alay words. Under these purposes, this research used the descriptive qualitative will intend to give information concerning the current status of phenomenon. The current status of phenomenon in this research is word formation used by the Alay Twitter user in Tweeting. Because of the design is descriptive qualitative, the researcher will explain about Alay words. After all of the explanation, researcher goes to find and discuss the data. By the investigation researcher found 17 (seventeen) or 21% of total 82 (eighty two) Alay words applied in word formation processes, those are clipping 13 (16%), multiple processes 3 (4%) and borrowing 1 (1%). Moreover, there are 65 (sixty five) or 79% of the Alay words close with the conversion in kinds of word formations processes. If the theory of conversion according to Yule (1996) there was a changes nouns start to be used as verbs and verbs can become nouns. The researcher think that the Alay word also has a changes the function of number as letter (based on physical appearance) and letter as number (based on spelling).
