  • Teaching young learners is different from teaching adult learners. Different characteristic possessed by children made different way how they learn something. Children have a very short attention and concentration in learning. Besides, they like to learn something through concrete object and should be stimulated in such way to arouse their focus toward material taught. Consequently, it needs specific strategy in teaching young learners especially for those who are in stage of learning basic language. They like to learn through interesting way such as playing games, puzzles, coloring picture, singing song etc. This research aimed at studying the teaching strategy in teaching young learners at SDN Mulyoagung 03 Malang and the implementation in classroom activity. The research used descriptive qualitative in the form of narrative. The writer took one English tutor of VIP English course at SDN Mulyoagung 03 as the subject of the study. To collect the data and information necessary for the research, the writer conducted the classroom observation and interviewed the tutor of English extracurricular. After analyzing the data, the result of this research showed that the English tutor often used imitation and modeling, game and song in teaching English extracurricular at SDN Mulyoagung 03 Malang. The strategies were used because they were appropriate to childrenÂ’s way of learning in which they like to learn through model, repetition and drill activities. Body language or facial expression also used to help them grasp the material being taught. In explaining the material, the tutor provided modeling and example in term of oral and written repeatedly and then imitated by the students. If the students made wrong pronunciation, the tutor corrected it and modeled how to pronounce correctly. To avoid studentÂ’s boredom, the tutor gave game and song. In using those strategies, the tutor explained the material step by step, beginning with the pre-instruction, whilst-instruction, and post-instruction. In conclusion, based on the result above, the tutor had applied various strategies to avoid monotonous in teaching to ease the students grasp the material quickly.
