- Perception is an active process of creating meaning by selecting, organizing and interpreting people, objects, events, situation and activities. The students have different perception toward the use of role play technique in speaking. Their perception could be good or poor. It is caused by some factors either internal factor or external factor. Someone would have a positive perception if she or he has a positive interpretation in evaluating something, and she or he would have a negative perception if she or he has a negative interpretation too in evaluating something. Thus, the purposes of this study are to know about the teacherÂ’s implementation on the use of role play technique in teaching speaking and the studentsÂ’ perception toward the use of role play technique in teaching speaking. This study used descriptive qualitative and quantitative research design. The population of this study was second year 175 students of SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Batu and the sample of this study was 35 students and one English teacher at second year of SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Batu. The instruments used in this study were observation and questionnaire. Based on the result of this study, it showed that role play technique in teaching speaking was very helpful in making the students able to speak up in speaking class. It made the students more enjoyable because they felt free to express their idea by the guidance of the teacher. Furthermore, the second year students at SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Batu had good perception toward the use of role play technique in teaching speaking.
