  • Speaking ability is considered as the most important skill in language learning, because the purpose of learning a foreign language is to use the target language in the real communication. Students in their school are demanded to be able to use English in speaking. Unfortunately, there are many teachers that still have difficulty in teaching speaking skill. It causes the students are not motivated and interested in speaking. Students tend to be reticence than they have to speak. This problem makes the speaking activity become ineffective in the classroom. To overcome this problem, the researcher tried to implement Three-Step Interview method. The objectives of this research were to know how Three-Step Interview method works for the tenth grade studentsÂ’ speaking class at SMA Tamansiswa Malang and to know whether or not Three-Step Interview method improve the tenth grade studentsÂ’ speaking ability at SMA Tamansiswa Malang. The design of this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR) at senior high school. The research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle was consisted of four stages: planning, action, observation and reflection. The subject of the research was the tenth grade students at SMA Tamansiswa Malang that was consisted of 25 students. The instrument used to collect the data was observation, field note, and speaking test. The results of this research showed that applying three-step interview method improved the tenth grade studentsÂ’ speaking ability. It could be seen from the improvement of studentsÂ’ average score in each cycle. In the cycle I, the studentsÂ’ average score is 65.17 and the percentage of students that reach minimal standard score is 43.47% (10 students). While, in the cycle II, the studentsÂ’ average score is 70.24 and the percentage of students that reach minimal standard score is 72.72% (16 students). Based on the result, the researcher hopes that three-step interview method is able to give English teachers an inspiration to apply this method in speaking class. Also, teacher can give the students more time to practice their speaking.
