  • This study is intended to find out studentsÂ’ speaking problems and their strategies used in overcoming the problems. It was conducted at SMPM 8 Batu in class VII E, because the students of class VII E do not have sufficient speaking skill although their teacher has given them various techniques in teaching English lesson such as role play, discussion, conversation etc. This was a case study research because (1) the researcher found that this class has lower ability in speaking than other class, (2) it was conducted only in class VII E, and (3) the goal was a detailed description and understanding of the entity. The subject were 33 students of class VII E at the first semester at SMPM 8 Batu 2011/2012 academic year. In this study, the instruments used were pre-observation to know the problems of the speaking faced by the students, a questionnaire for all students of class VII E, and interview for some students. The findings of this study revealed learning strategies used by the students to overcome speaking problems, the students used some learning strategies which are cognitive strategies (x ̅ 78,80), metacognitive strategies (x ̅ 80,60), memory-related strategies (x ̅ 71,25), compensatory strategies (x ̅ 70,75), affective strategies (x ̅ 87,16), and social strategies(x ̅ 78). The highest mean score of learning strategies used by the students was affective strategies with the mean score 87,16. All those strategies used by the students to overcome their speaking problems but in different frequency.
