- Literature is a kind of art that offers pleasure and illumination. It gives the picture of speaker’s culture that can be known by looking carefully at human experience generally. Novel is work of literature, which delineates the life and human activities by means of presenting various acts and dialogues between groups of characters. The writer of this thesis chooses a novel because she can get many experience and knowledge which are necessary for her life. Moreover, she is interested in learning personality of people and the real life. This study is to analyse “A Family of Her Own” by Brenda Novak. It focuses on social conflict of the main characters and the way they solve their social conflict. The study applies a descriptive analytical method. The approach of this study is an objective approach, because the writer of this thesis does not have to study the author’s life, background of work, or background of society. The object of the study is the novel “A Family of Her Own” by Brenda Novak. The data were selected on the basis of purpose of the study. The steps of collecting data of this study were, (1) reading and understanding the novel, (2) choosing the data which is related to the object of the study, (3) selecting the data, and (4) marking the data which is related to the problem that will be analyzed. Based on the finding and discussion, the writer finds the social conflict that happens in the novel are the confrontation between Katie Roger, Rebecca and Booker Robinson. The social conflict happens because Katie Roger is forced to get married to Andy Bray by her mother but Katie Roger refuses it. To solve their social conflict Katie Roger tries to ask her mother to forgive her. Besides, Rebecca tries to accept Katie Roger’s decision and Andy Bray does too.
