- This study was focused on investigations the motivation of English students in choosing English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Therefore, the writer wants to invastigate about: (1) What the factors affecting motivation of the first semester English students to choose English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang and (2) What the most dominant factor affecting motivation that influenced the first semester students of English to choose English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The method used in this study was descriptive quantitative because this study was related to number and statistical data. Besides, the writer wants to describe the factor affecting motivation of students of English in choosing English Department and to know the most dominant factor affecting motivation of the first semester English students to choose English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The population of this study was the first semester students of English Department consisting six classes. The writer used cluster sampling and took class A which consist of 50 students. Based on analysis, there are 13 factors which represented extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Seven factors were for intrinsic motivation such as self-esteem, self-actualization, self determination, self efficacy, attribution, engaged participation in learning comunities, and maintaining identity through partisipation in activities of group. Six which represented extrinsic motivation such as reinforcement, rewards, punishment, incentives, social relationship, and classroom climate. Likert Scale questionnare is used in collecting the data. From the result of the questionnare,the mean score obtained by the students in intrinsic motivation which was obtained from questionnare number 1 until 14 was 49. and the mean score for extrinsic motivation which was collected from the questions no 15-26 was 28,8.Thus, it can be concluded that the studentsÂ’ intrinsic motivation was higher or more dominant than their extrinsic motivation.
