- BIPA provides teachers to help Darmasiswa students in learning Bahasa Indonesia and culture of Indonesia. Not all Darmasiswa students can speak English and understand what the teachers say. Therefore, as the teacher they should have a certain strategy in order that Darmasiswa students can understand their ideas and so do the teachers. Besides, the strategies used to avoid misunderstanding and misinterpretation of communication among them. The strategy here is related to communication. This study concerned with Communication Strategies Employed by The Teachers of BIPA toward Darmasiswa Students in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The writer wanted to know in details communication strategies used by the teachers of BIPA in delivering their ideas in the target language (Bahasa Indonesia). The purposes of this study were to describe and know the communication strategies employed by the teachers of BIPA toward Darmasiswa students in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The design of this study was descriptive research because the writer wanted to describe and know the communication strategies employed by the teachers of BIPA toward darmasiswa students in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The subject of this study was all of four BIPAÂ’s teachers. The instruments were non-participant observation and semi-structured interview. Based on the observation, the writer classified the kind of communication strategies by Dornyei (1995, in Brown 2000:128). The data collected in fourth times in Darmasiswa class in UMM. The writer not only found nine strategies, out of thirteen strategies, but also two additional strategies namely self correction and repetition used by the teachers of BIPA toward Darmasiswa students in UMM. The most frequently used communication strategy by the teachers of BIPA is literal translation strategy. They used it to make the communication easier. However, teachers sometimes combine this strategy with other eight communication strategies.
