  • People always associate swear word with a bad or inappropriate word, which should not be used in a conversation. But, there are some people who consider that swear words can be used to express the feeling and reduce tension when they are angry and can be used for different purposes. This study analyzes swear words used by Mitch Planko on David Dobkin’s Film “The Change-Up”. The writer wants to discover the kinds and underlying context of swear words used by Mitch Planko because in the film. He often used the swear words in his daily life and used many kinds of swear word for different purposes. This study applied descriptive qualitative method which was used to review literary research to provide research data. Dealing with the study, the writer used objective approach. The object of the study was David Dobkin’s film “The Change-Up ” and the data was taken from the scenes, events, and dialogues which were related with the problems of study. The result of the study showed there were seven classifications of swear-words used by Mitch Planko on David Dobkin’s film “The Change-Up”. They were genital, anatomical, excretory, animal, general, copulative, and religion term. Then, there were five purposes in using swear words used by Mitch Planko on David Dobkin’s film “The Change-Up”. Firstly, he used swear words to direct attention from the people surrounding. Secondly, he used swear words to insult when he had strong emotion. Thirdly, he used swear words to provoke and made the confrontation to the others. Next, he used swear words to discredit. He used it to express his dislike about many things that were not suitable with him. Finally, he used swear words to provide catharsis when he was angry or disturbed or hurt physically and mentally.
