  • Indonesia consists of various ethnic groups and regions. Each tribe has their own uniqueness. One of the tribe that has the unique culture is the Samawa tribe (names for Sumbawa tribe). The uniqueness can be seen, for example, from the procession of wedding ceremony. In Sumbawa’s traditional wedding ceremony, there are many things to be done by the bride and the groom. One of them is “Barodak” ceremony. The writer interested in analyzing “Barodak” ceremony of SumbawaÂ’s traditional wedding. The problems of this study are: 1) What are the symbols used in “Barodak” ceremony of Sumbawa’s traditional wedding? and 2) What are the meaning of symbols used in “Barodak” ceremony of Sumbawa’s traditional wedding?. The ceremony is taken because of several reasons. First, not all of Sumbawa society knows the meaning of symbols used in the ceremony. Second, there is no previous research and printed document about Barodak ceremony. This study used descriptive qualitative methods as a research design with ethnographic approach. The object of this study is the symbol used in ‘Barodak’ ceremony of Sumbawa’s traditional wedding. The instrument used to collect the data was observation and interview. Finally, the writer analyzed the data descriptively. The result of this study shows that there are eleven symbols used in ‘Barodak’ ceremony. Those are, Odak, Dila, Baso Tebu, Punti Serimpi, Nyer Uda Telu Kodeng, Awi Lompo, Kere Pitu, Ai Kemang, Api Sapa, Bore, Beteq Loto Kuning. Each symbol has the meaning that influences the life of Sumbawa people. From the meaning of the symbols, it can be classified into two divisions. First, the symbols that have meaning related to the Islam religion. It can be seen from several symbols such as Dila, Baso Tebu, Punti Serimpi, Nyer Uda Telu Kodeng, Awi Lompo. These symbols almost have the same meaning in order to the bride and the groom may have good life, good behavior, and good charity and always live in Islam religion (Sakinah, Mawaddah, warahmah). Second, the symbols that have meaning related to the mystical things such as Kere Pitu, Ai Kemang, Api Sapa, Beteq Loto Kuning. The meaning of these symbols is used to reject the disaster, to avoid the bride and groom from negative energy and to expel the mystical influence that will disturb the bride and groom.
