  • Language is an important means of communication. It has a social function as a tool to communicate between human beings. It is required by people to fulfill their needs as individual creatures and as a part of communication itself. By the language, people can transfer and show their feelings, thoughts, ideas, emotion to another and they use a language to get information from others. The purposes of this study were to find out the bad languages and their meaning in “12 Steps” novel by Darren R. Hawkins. In conducting of this study, the writer applied descriptive qualitative research as the research design because it described the phenomena that exist in the novel and the data are collected in the form of words not in the form of numbers. The writer used objective approach because she did not study the author’s life, author’s feeling and emotion. She focused on analyzing of the author’s work. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found out that there were 21 bad languages in “12 Steps” novel included in vulgar, taboo and swearing. The meanings of bad languages found in this novel were various based on the context and situation. Some of the examples, vulgar are the word idiots has the meaning mental illness; the phrase fuck you has the meaning poop. Taboo are the word asshole has the meaning butt; the phrase Jesus fuck has the meaning poop. Swearing are the phrase fucked up has the meaning idiot; the phrase dumb fucker has the meaning idiot.
