- Language is considered to be a system of communicating with other people using sounds, words, and symbols in expressing a meaning, idea, or thought. Learning foreign languages cannot be separated from learning how the language is used in daily life, especially how the language affects and creates the native’s culture. Therefore the person who learn a foreign language cannot be competent in the language if they do not have an awareness of that target culture, and how that culture relates to their own first language and culture. This study was conducted to analyze the intercultural awareness on 6th grade English for Young Learners’ selected textbooks in kota Malang. The analysis focused on teaching learning activities’ materials based on the elements of culture which are products, ideas, and behaviors. The research problems were the intercultural awareness employed in those three most popular textbooks in kota Malang being analyzed, the most intercultural awareness employed in teaching learning activities, and the less intercultural awareness employed in teaching learning activities of each textbook. In analyzing the data, this research used descriptive research design because it focused on finding and interpreting the intercultural awareness on those textbooks instead of counting the statistics. The method used in this study was documentary research whereas all the information was focused on analyzing a certain topic and interpreting recorded materials within its own context of textbook as source of analysis. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that there were three elements of culture employed in the textbooks being analyzed: product culture, ideas culture, and behaviors culture. The total number of intercultural awareness employed was 122 in the sample analyzed. Product culture took 49.2% of the intercultural awareness found in the textbooks. 32.8% was in behavior culture type, while ideas culture had 18% of the total number of intercultural awareness employed on textbooks being analyzed. This can shows that product culture is the most employed intercultural awareness while ideas culture the less employed intercultural awareness in teaching learning activities materials of the textbooks being analyzed.
