  • This research studied about the teaching methods used by native speaker in teaching speaking at the fourth semester of English Department of UMM. Teaching method was an application of way or strategy used by a teacher. It helps the teacher to achieve the goal of teaching and learning process. Teaching methods used by native speaker would increase the interest and attention of the students especially in learning speaking. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative to analyze the data and describe about the teaching methods used by native speaker in teaching speaking at the fourth semester of English Department of UMM. The subject of this research was a native speaker who taught speaking IV of the English Department of UMM. Observation checklist and structured interview were used to collect and analyzed the data. The purpose of observation was to get the data about the kinds of teaching method used by native speaker. Meanwhile, interview was used to know the reasons in applying the teaching methods used by native speaker in teaching speaking. The researcher found three teaching methods used by native speaker in teaching speaking. Those were Communicative Language Teaching, Direct Method, and Audio-Lingual Method. In Communicative Language Teaching he applied discussion and presentation, then for Direct Method the activities are asking and answering questions. Meanwhile, in Audio-Lingual Method he applied repetition technique. The reasons of using Communicative Language Teaching and Direct Method were the native speaker expected the students would knew how they should speak up in a simple conversation and they would be able to communicate in English communicatively and creatively to think in the target language. Meanwhile, the reason of using Audio-Lingual Method, especially in repetition technique was native speaker expected the student’s pronunciation better than before and they could pronounce the words correctly.
