- Authentic materials are produced for the purposes of communication not for purposes of language teaching. It means that the students will feel that they learn the language which is provided in a real life communication. In teaching using authentic material, the teacher should be selective in choosing the materials. It is to keep the willingness of students in learning English. By selecting the appropriate authentic materials, it will help the teacher get the appropriate response from the students. The purposes of this study were: (1) To find out the kinds of authentic materials, (2) To describe the implementation of the authentic materials, (3) To know the students’ response toward the authentic materials used by the 6th grade teachers of EYL course at UMM-2012. This study used a qualitative research design because the writer gained the information in the real condition and situation. The research subjects were 6th grade teachers of EYL course at UMM-2012. There were 5 teachers who used authentic materials. To collect the data, the writer used one time participant observation and eight times nonparticipant observation, and used structured questionnaire. Then, the result of this study would be described in the form of descriptive essay. Based on the research findings, the 6th grade teachers of EYL course at UMM-2012 used three authentic materials; they were: 1) authentic visual materials: wordless street sign, 2) authentic printed materials: greeting cards, restaurant menu, song’s script, 3) authentic listening/viewing materials: selling and buying video. Besides, in implementing those authentic materials, the teacher applied them in the whilst-task. The implementation depended on the kinds of authentic material which were chosen by the teacher. Moreover, the result of this study showed the total of students’ response was 77.58%. It means the students gave a good response. In short, using authentic materials can attract the students’ attention, stimulate the students, and reach their motivation to learn English.
