  • Language is an important means of communication. It has a social function as a tool to communicate between human beings. It is required by people to fulfill their needs as individual creatures and as a part of communication itself. By the language, people can transfer and show their feelings, thoughts, ideas, emotion to another and they use a language to get information from others. The purpose of this study was to find out the slangs, their meaning, and their characteristic in the novel “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams. In conducting this study, the writer applied descriptive qualitative research as the research design because it described the phenomena that exist in the novel and the data are collected in the form of words not in the form of numbers. The writer used objective approach because she did not study the author’s life, author’s feeling and emotion. She focused on analyzing of the author’s work. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found out that there were 31 slangs in the novel “A Streetcar Named Desire”. The meanings of slang found in this novel were various based on the context and situation. Most of slangs were used in informal situation to make the conversation more interesting and attractive. The characteristic of slang found in this novel frequent occurrence is typical of informal situation. There were 11 slangs belong to the characteristic slang is found in words not in grammar and 20 slangs belong to the characteristic slang is creative.
