- The use of language has been varied among group of people and speakers from different social background. It reflects the structure of the society and its relationship with the language itself. Moreover, it creates language variation in the society. One of language variations is language style. Language style has been the central issue of this research as it appeared and used by group of people or speakers in society as well as in certain occasion. In this case, the language style used by speakers in a talk show program. This research was focused on the kinds of language style and the characteristics of language style used by the presenter of Oprah Winfrey Show. Thus, the purposes of this research were to know the kinds of language style and to describe the characteristics of language style used by the presenter of Oprah Winfrey Show. In conducting this research, the researcher used qualitative research design to know the kinds of language styles and to describe the characteristics of language styles used by the presenter of Oprah Winfrey Show. The object of this research was the talk show of Oprah Winfrey Show entitled “Dr. Oz’s Ultimate Checklist”. This research used document analysis as the instrument to get the data. The researcher watched the talk show to know the language styles and the characteristics of language styles used by the presenter of Oprah Winfrey Show from the video documentary. In addition, the researcher read the transcript of the talk show video to get more insight about the data of document analysis. The findings of this research showed that there were two kinds of language style used by the presenter of Oprah Winfrey Show; they were casual style and consultative style. Moreover, the characteristics of language style used by the presenter of Oprah Winfrey show are contraction, ellipsis of unstressed words such as auxiliary, subject, and be. Other characteristics, in addition, are the use of nickname in addressing audiences and the use of slang expression.
