- In teaching English to young learners, the teachers have to use language that can be understood easily by the students. In this case, classroom language is an appropriate language that must be used by the teachers. Classroom language is simple and meaningful expression in English that can be learnt and understood by the students. Besides, classroom language is a necessary tool for helping students’ progress from dependent on the book and the teacher to independent. The objectives of this study was to find out and describe classroom language and kinds of classroom language used by the 3rd grade pre-service teachers in teaching EYL Course at English Department of UMM. Besides, the objectives of this study was to show and explain the pre-service teachers’ reasons in using classroom language in teaching English. In this study, the writer used qualitative research design. The subject of this study were 18 pre-service teachers who taught EYL Course at 3rd grade in academic year 2012-2013. The instruments used to collect the data were non-participant observation and interview. Based on the results of the data analysis, the writer found that the EYL pre-service teachers of 3rd grade at English Department of UMM used classroom language based on the theory of classroom language and kinds of classroom language. There were two kinds of classroom language used by the pre-service teachers, such as: classroom instruction and classroom interaction. Classroom instruction used to give instruction through simple and meaningful expression. Then, classroom interaction used to create good relationship or social-cultural between the teachers and the students or between the student and the student.
